Ciao my fellow Club Paesano Members.
As always, I hope that this month’s LaCarota finds you all happy, healthy and safe! I hope that everyone is doing well and enjoying the season. The holidays and the Superbowl are over, but Carnevale is here. Our days are slowly getting longer, and our temperature a little warmer. We are still in our winter season, and the groundhog saw his shadow, so they say be ready for 6 more weeks of winter. For those of you that enjoy the winter months, great news, for the rest of us, I can’t wait for 80 degrees, and sun. Well, like this short month, I’ll try to keep this month’s LaCarota short. So here we go.
I thought that I would be able to tell you the results of our Carnevale Dance, but realized that February is a short month and I need to get this month’s newsletter out quicker than normal. I’ll have our results at March’s membership meeting, and in next month’s LaCarota. Let’s hope it was a success!
Just like that, our Heritage Night is just around the corner. Sunday March 13th. Doors will open at 3:30pm. This night is being offered to honor our founding members. The men that started “Club Paesano”, what we call “Our Club” today. It’s also to honor all of our members, past, present and future. A walk down memory lane, and a history lesson for some of our newer members. Our menu has been locked in. One of our newest members, Greg DiMaestri, has graciously offered to prepare an authentic Italian meal for us, that will be served “Country Style” like our traditional Italian suppers at home. We are still in the process of putting the rest of the night’s activities together. We are only a couple of weeks away folks, so any help with key speakers and more memorabilia would be appreciated. We will also need a head count, for food purchase. The price for this wonderful night will be $15 a person which allows you to bring and enjoy a bottle of your favorite wine as well. We will collect money at the door. Cash or credit card will be excepted. Please “RSVP” as soon as you can. Email, or call me to let me know if you are coming. 503-891-7374 email@example.com. This is our night my friends. Let’s enjoy it together!
We’re still having our Monday Night Socials, and are currently working on some upcoming events outside of the Club. We will keep you posted. Stay tuned.
Paesano Club Bocce:
A lot of our Paesano Club Bocce news is the same as last month’s newsletter, so I’ll have you refer back to it for that info. However, I do have a couple of announcements that I would like to give you. First off, we will be having this year’s “League Night” Sign up meeting, Tuesday March 22nd at 7pm. If you are a returning team, you will have 1st chance at signing back up for the same night as you played on last year. We will have at least 3 nights again, and maybe a 4th night if all goes well. Right now, it’s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. If you are interested in playing and are a new player with a team or solo, we will find a spot for you and/ or a team if you don’t have one. You may have to be a little flexible.
My second announcement comes with a very heavy heart. We recently found out that we lost 3 of our Bocce members and family. Within the last few weeks, we lost Greg Linglebach who played on our Tuesday night league with Gresham Ford.
Henri Vondemfange, husband of Liz who is still playing with us. Henri played for a lot of years at Paesano and downtown Portland. Henri was a US representative for the contingent that went to South America for Bocce.
We just found out today about the passing of our brother Mike Neish. Mike was a central part of Paesano Club bocce. Not only was he a very skilled bocce player with a high I.Q. but he was also an architect of building bocce courts. Mike was one of the main cogs in getting our two new courts built a few years ago and was in the middle of building our next 2 courts. He was very precise and critical in the construction of these new courts. Mike was very close and a very good friend to a lot of us that played bocce. He would give you the shirt off his back. Mike is survived by his wife Liz, daughter Katie and son Spencer.
All 3 of our bocce brothers will be missed and we pray for their souls and their families. When we find out any information about Memorial Services, I will definitely let you know. Rest in Peace, Greg, Henri and Mike.
As I stated in last month’s newsletter, Cedarville Lodge & Park is going through some changes right now and is still in the midst of recovering from the devastation of what Covid did to the economy. We had cancellations, re- scheduling, and some new bookings. One of our main changes was in our “Venue Director” position. Maria Duong was brought in to replace our old manager. Maria has been doing a fantastic job at promoting, viewing, and booking the lodge. She’s had a big task in front of her and has been doing a wonderful job! As Joe Castellano said at last month’s meeting, there are a lot of changes happening with Cedarville Lodge. One of the biggest is in the rental fees. They now have a list of discounts for CP Members, Shareholders, non-profits, veterans, chamber members, etc. Please contact Maria at 503-577-8471 and she will be happy to go over this with you and give you a quote. Let’s help Cedarville get back on its feet. If you or anyone that you know is in need a venue to rent for an event, please think of Cedarville first. Just remember, if there’s no Cedarville, there’s probably no Club Paesano!
Please keep the date open. Sunday May 15th for the “Primavera Italiana” This will be an All Italian get together. We will be introducing our newest Honorary Consul of Italy, Vytas Babusis and our newly elected Representative for the Comites of San Fransico, Angela Zagarella. We will have a couple other key speakers as well. More than anything, this was put together to have a big Italian get together, and an Italian PARTY! We will have Adrea Scasso (from KBOO FM “Italian Hour”) DJ’ing and playing both Italian and American dance hits. We’ll supply light appetizers and desserts. Club Paesano will supply a “No Host” Bar.
This idea was brought to me by Angela Zagarella and Pasquale Madeddu, the Associazione Culturale Italiana President, and owner of “Caffe Umbrio”.
They wanted to create this “All Italian gathering” to introduce these newly elected officials, but to also introduce our different clubs to one another and also to introduce many newly settled Italians that have recently moved to the Portland/Vancouver area. Because of Covid, a lot of these people have not been able to get out and be introduced to the Italian community in our area. When I was asked to be involved with this, I jumped at the opportunity. I see it as a chance to introduce so many of these people to Club Paesano and to Cedarville Lodge and Park. I want to be able to show them not only our Club Paesano hospitality, and the beauty of Cedarville lodge and park, but I would also like to show them the value of perhaps becoming a member of our great club, or even renting out a fantastic venue. Cedarville Lodge was very gracious in letting us use the facilities to house this event which has the potential of becoming very BIG! I hope that all of you can make it and that we have a huge “Club Paesano” representation. I would love to show the surrounding Italian community how special Club Paesano and our members really are. Most importantly, come out with your families and friends to have a great time getting to meet and party with your fellow Italians! More information to come but plan on attending.
Please contact Steve Petruzelli for information and to purchase shares. 503-620-3447 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Well once again, we had a different winner for the coveted bottle of vino. Congratulations to Jim Burch for correctly answering last month’s question. Will someone get on a roll again and run the table or will everyone get a chance to win. Well, you can’t win if you don’t play.
So, this month I wanted to get a little more personal, meaning I want to see how much we really know about each other, and how much we really pay attention to one another. Maybe some of you care to know and some of you don’t, but I really think it’s important to get to know your fellow members.
The 1st personal question will be about me of course. A really easy one I think, so here it goes.
Where was Rick Cervi born and raised? Name the city for a potential tie breaker.
All correct answers will be entered for a chance to win. Good Luck
First of all, I’d like to apologize for this month’s newsletter coming out later than usual. I totally forgot about the shorter month, and my weeks have been very busy. Time just got away from me. I thank Kathy Battilega for all she does and for putting out LaCarota every month without fail and putting up with my drawn-out issues. With the sudden passing of our fellow bocce members, it once again puts everything into perspective. How fragile our lives really are. You can be here one day and gone the next. I’m not writing this to depress you, but just to remind you how valuable our lives are and how important we are to our loved ones and how important they are to us. Don’t fester on the negative all the time, enjoy the fruits of your labor. Enjoy who you are and what you love. Don’t go to bed angry, say I’m sorry and I love you. Give hugs and High Fives. It’s been proven time and time again, life’s too short, so play hard, and love more. Enjoy yourselves your family, and this famiglia we call Club Paesano.
Take Care and Salute.
