La Carota December 2021
Dear Paesano Club Members,
As always, I hope that this month’s LaCarota newsletter finds you all doing well. Happy, healthy and safe! I hope that everyone has been able to prep their homes and belongings for the winter, and are getting ready for the holidays that await us. Thanksgiving, is less than a week away, and Christmas a month out. I always say it, and find that with age, I say it so much more, but I’ll say it again, “Where does the time go?” Felt like yesterday was a beautiful pleasant day in August, enjoying the warmth and the sun. Oh well, now we have the pleasure of spending our joyous holidays with our families and friends.
Gresham Chamber of Commerce news:
On Wednesday November 10th, The Gresham Chamber of Commerce hosted their Fall Expo. All new and current Chamber members were able to sign up and attend. By signing up, you were given the opportunity to set up a booth, and promote your business. You were also given the opportunity to mingle and meet other businesses and their owners who belong to the Chamber as well. I took advantage of this Expo, for obvious reasons, as it gave us another chance to meet potential new members, promote the Cedarville Lodge and Park for rentals, and also to promote and sign up new Paesano Bocce members. The night was a complete success. I thank Dino Gavazza, and Mario Pompei, for coming out and helping me with the set up and the promotion of our club. We got to meet a lot of people and business owners that could help us, in numerous ways. We met potential partners, renters, bocce members, and a few Italians, that were highly interested in joining what we have and be proud of. Our Club! The 3 of us worked the room, and had a lot of people stopping by and wanting to know what we were all about. We wrote down plenty of information, and received a lot of compliments on what we do. The fact that there are plenty of people out there that don’t know who we are, or what we do, always amazes me. You would think that for as long as the Club has been around, the public would know of us, but
unfortunately a lot don’t. Whether they are new to the area, or just thought that we were some private club in the woods. Some of the people said, “You’re that place off the Springwater trail,” or “I went to an event their 20yrs ago”. Many didn’t know that we have our 4 main events that are open to the public. Many didn’t know that we have bocce leagues that are open to the public. Many didn’t know that anyone can rent the facilities. That is why I think that it’s so important to promote as much as we can, outside of the club and to be involved with other groups, such as the Chamber, other Italian social clubs, charities, the Farmers Market and the like. It gets our name out there and people will remember us. We’ve had people come to our Concert in the Park, and some of our dances because of it. We all need to keep promoting, and letting the public know who we are, and what we do!
If you haven’t heard yet, our annual Members Christmas Dinner is back on, and will be held, Sunday December 5th. Doors open at 3pm, with dinner to be served at 5pm. We will have the installment of our new board of Directors, our newest crop of members, and our “Person of the Year” for 2021. Of course, this will be followed by our traditional singing of Christmas carols, including the fan favorite, “Domenic the Christmas Donkey”! What would a CP Christmas dinner be without the singing of good Ol “Domenic”? I know that there will be some members that will be over joyed! Ol Saint Nick himself will also pay us a visit. That should make the kids, and the “kids at heart” very happy.
You should be receiving a call from either Marc Battilega or myself, to find out whether you, your family and guests, will be attending. We need to have a head count no later than Sunday November 28th, to give to our caterer. We will also need a head count for the children too, so we can tell Santa how many gifts he needs his elves to make. If you received your call, and didn’t have a chance to respond, either call back or email me at email@example.com. If we don’t hear back from you by the 28th, then we’ll assume that you will not be attending. The Christmas party has always been one of my favorites. A great way of welcoming in the holiday, and enjoying the company of our great members, both new and old.
All members attending must be in good standing. This means if you owe any monies to the Club, then it must be paid before attending, or at the door that day. Please see John Kern if you plan on paying at the door.
We will also be following Covid-19 Guidelines. Masks, Social Distancing, and hand sanitizer is highly recommended. We will provide masks and hand sanitizer if you don’t have your own. I want to make sure that we all have a great time, and feel comfortable being at the party!
Election of New Board & Members:
At the Christmas party, we install the newest members to the Board of Directors. We also welcome our newest members, and we introduce our latest, “Person of the Year”. If you would like to be a part of this process, then it is very important to attend our next General Membership meeting on Wednesday December 1st. You’ll be given the opportunity to vote on people who you feel can help the club move forward, work hard and bring in some new energy, also voting in some new members that can do the same. You can vote on a person that you appreciate, and feel deserves the “Person of the Year Award” as well. You will need to be present to vote, or arrange a way to vote by proxy if you cannot be present.
We will be replacing 3 board members this year:
Outgoing Board Members; Mario Pompei, Jim Burch, Joe Castellano
Nominations for New Board Members; Mario Pompei, Doug Burchak, Chris Siri, Pete Rebagliati, Ken Gemma
New Member Nominees: Greg DeMaestri, Anna Salanti, Frank Cook, Daniela Sordo, Dedra Ceglie, Debbie Calcagno Guthrie.
Person of the Year Nominees: Mario Pompei, Marc Battilega, Rick Cervi, John Kern, Jim Calcagno, Doug Burchak, Geno Benagni, Don Fillipi.
I just want to thank the outgoing board members for their hard work and dedication to the club and our members. It’s very much appreciated.
I am also looking forward to working with the new nominees that are voted to the board and also hearing and working with our newest members that are voted in. All of your ideas, energy, and hard work will be appreciated by all of our members, and will help to promote our club even more. Everyone counts!
Our annual “Carnevale Dance” is set to take place, Saturday February 26th/2022
Tickets on our website will go on sale soon. No time like the present to start advertising, and making plans to come to this great party! Tell your family and friends. A great way to kick off our 2022 Club Paesano events.
Paesano Bocce Club:
I’m sad to say that our Fall league finally came to a close a few weeks ago, which brought an end to the 2021 Season. The rains and cold finally took hold, and made it impossible to play without doing a lot of clean up and the hope that it could stay dry. Another reason that we need the courts covered! More to follow.
I’m very happy to say that we had a very successful 2021 season. Not only did we have our Monday & Tuesday night leagues, but we also were able to add a Wednesday night league. The popularity of the sport is growing, and so many people came out to play. Wednesday night was focused on “Rookies” and “Novice” players. It was nice to see a new batch of people that were excited to be out there and to learn the sport. Some already look like they are ready to advance to our Tuesday or Monday night leagues. It was great to see our new members learning, and having a fun, yet competitive time on the courts. Many are already itching to sign up for next year. Another 1st for our Club, was starting a Fall League, which just ended. There was so much interest. We had about 20 members come out to play every Sunday morning. We played an “Il Sacco” style, which meant that we picked names out of a hat and everyone got a chance to
play with everyone else. Experienced players with rookies and novice players all mixed every week. Great opportunity for our new members to play and get to know different members. We had terrific feedback from everyone and definitely will bring it back next year.
On another happy note, Paesano Bocce Club was well represented and did very good at the annual “Peppermill Bocce Tournament” in Reno, Nevada this month. All 3 of our teams that entered, finished in the top 20 spots out of a field of 60 strong teams from California, a few from Washington and a couple of the teams came from the mid-west too.
Our very own Club Paesano members, Mario Pompei and Doug Burchak’s team (“I Prescelti”) finished in 7th place. My team (“Pallino or Bust”) finished in 15th place. Benedeto and Antonio Mititiero’s team (“Stugatz”) took 19th place. Congratulations!!! The top 20 places paid out money, so that was an added bonus. It was a memorable time and am looking forward to next year.
We have started construction of our two newest courts. They should be finished and ready to go by the start of the 2022 season. These will be “World Class” bocce courts, and we are hoping to attract new members, and continue to grow the sport.
If you are interested in playing next year, please go to our Paesano Bocce Club website, www.paesanobocceclub.com or please speak to Mario Pompei, Doug Burchak, Dino Gavazza or myself. We’d be happy to get you involved and signed up.
We are still raising funds for our courts and roof. We are selling signs, (Family, Business), personalized pavers, t-shirts, hats and golf towels. What great gifts to give loved ones for Christmas. We will also except monetary donations.
Fun Committee News:
The “Fun Committee” is still hosting our “Monday Night Social”. It’s been a lot of fun, and a great way to relax and get to know some of your fellow CP Members. If you haven’t been to one, you’re missing out! Please make it a point to do so. We are always looking for fun things to do and some new ideas. If you would like to
see a certain event done or have any ideas for our Monday nights or a “FC Night Out” please let me know, and we will try to make it happen.
We are currently working on a couple of things and will keep you all informed when we are ready to make them happy, so stay tuned.
If you are interested in purchasing Cedarville Shares, please contact Steve Petruzelli at 503-620-3447 or firstname.lastname@example.org What a great way to own a piece of Cedarville Lodge/Park. The Home of Club Paesano!
Last month we had 2 chances to win, and we had 2 separate winners. My question last month had to do with our beloved Don Filippi. Congratulations to our 2 winners. Jim “Bam-Bam” Burch, and the “Come Back Kid” Mario Pompei. Mario won’t be denied! Every now and then, he throws out a carrot, to give you all a chance at a sip, but then takes it all back! He just proves month after month, that you can’t win if you don’t play. If you’d like to win, then take a shot at the question!
So, this month’s question will be a “Thanksgiving” question. Pretty simple. We’ll see who wants to take that wine bottle away from the Champ!
This month’s question is 2 parts.
1st Question: How many pounds of Turkey are consumed in U.S. on Thanksgiving Day? (Closest to the actual number wins)
2nd Question: Which State consumes the most Turkey per person?
There you have it. 2 “Butterball” questions. Let’s see who has the guts to go up against King Mario, and steal his crown!
All correct answers will be entered and you must be present to win. Good Luck!
With Thanksgiving, being a couple days away, my thoughts are obviously on giving thanks and praise to all that is good in my life, as I’m sure that you are doing as well.
First off, I’m thankful for everything that I have. A fantastic family, and friends, full of love and caring. People that would give you the shirt off their backs, and do anything for you. A good career, with the ability to take care of my family. A roof over my head and food in the cupboards. A great Club with a great group of members that I’m proud to belong to and am happy to call friends! Thankful to live in a country that is free, and allows you the right to be who you are, with no issues. I am very thankful! As we enter this season of giving and Christmas, let us all be thankful, but also remember those that are without, and aren’t as fortunate as a lot of us. Let’s help out where we can, and lend a hand to our fellow man. Please enjoy the day with your families and friends. Be good, and be safe.
